Moon Phase Today: June 05, 2021

The Moon's current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you're willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon's surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

Strawberry Moon after 19 days

Next Full Moon is the Strawberry Moon of June 2021 after 19 days on 24 June 2021 at 18:40.

Syzygy in 4 days

After 4 days on 10 June 2021 at 10:53 in ♊ Gemini, the Moon will be in New Moon geocentric conjunction with the Sun and this alignment forms next Sun-Moon-Earth syzygy.

Neap tide

There is low ocean tide today. Sun and Moon gravitational forces are not aligned, but meet at big angle, so their combined tidal force is weak.

Distance to Moon 401 606 km

Moon is 401 606 km (249 546 mi) away from Earth on this date. Moon moves farther next 2 days until apogee, when Earth-Moon distance will reach 406 230 km (252 420 mi).

Moon before northern standstill

7 days after previous South standstill on 28 May 2021 at 19:21 in ♑ Capricorn, when Moon has reached southern declination of ∠-25.647°. Next 6 days the lunar orbit moves northward to face North declination of ∠25.640° in the next northern standstill on 12 June 2021 at 04:11 in ♋ Cancer.

Lunar Report - 07/27/2020

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

Today's Moon phase for 27 July 2020
First Quarter 50% illuminated

The Moon's current phase for today and tonight is a New Moon phase. During this phase the Moon is to close to the sun in the sky to be visible. The moon rises and sets with the sun and is not present in the night sky. Because of this the night sky is darker and an excellent time to view other celestial objects. Like the Full Moon, a New Moon happens at a very specific time when the sun and moon have the same ecliptic longitude and it can be measured down to the second it occurs.

Sturgeon Moon after 7 days

* The exact date and time of this First Quarter phase is on 27 July 2020 at 12:32 UTC.

Neap tide
There is low ocean tide today. Sun and Moon gravitational forces are not aligned, but meet at big angle, so their combined tidal force is weak.

Moon after perigee
